Role-Playing Games

My first role-playing game was slightly before the release of the original Dungeons & Dragons; it was run by Michael Mornard, one of the members of the Lake Geneva Tactical Studies Association where role-playing came into useful form. (This was not the first role-playing game. Various games had had role-playing elements for a long time before, and there are a few recognizable role-playing games that predate D&D. It was the first commercial RPG.)

I have played in various campaigns of various sorts, and for the last dozen years or so have played Hero games almost exclusively.

As always, I have opinions, comments, and observations:

For those interested in a good free generic role-playing system, I would strongly recommend FUDGE, which has been published and is also freely available on the net. It isn't as polished as Hero or GURPS, but it is very flexible, fairly reasonable in what it allows, and the price is as good as you're going to get.

The biggest RPG link farm I know of is Surge's archive. For my favorite game, check the Hero games site.

By the way, am I the only person left who thinks that

  1. The concept of a Thieves' Guild is just plain silly
  2. The idea stems from Fritz Leiber, and him alone
  3. Leiber was trying to humorously show that Lankmar was decadent
  4. Far too many people swallowed the idea
  5. Far too many fantasy worlds now have Thieves' Guilds
